Civil Rights on the Line

Ida B. Wells did not confine her fight to the page. She organized.

She helped found the NAACP. She built clubs and women's organizations when the existing ones would not have her. She marched for suffrage and refused, famously, to be relegated to the back of a 1913 parade because of her race, stepping into the ranks she had been told to avoid. She testified, petitioned, and traveled abroad to make the world witness what America preferred to ignore. Her weapon was documentation. Her strategy was coalition.

The same causes, named again

The rights she gave her life to are contested again, from the ballot box to equal protection under the law. From newsrooms to classrooms to the streets, the questions are the ones she raised: the right to vote, the right to be safe, the right to be counted as fully human. What is required is what was always required, patient, organized, evidence-driven pressure, sustained past the point where it is fashionable.

Not a monument, a movement

It would be easier to make Ida B. Wells a statue, admire her from a safe distance, and call the work done. She would have had no patience for that. She measured people by what they built and whom they stood beside.

Rise With Wells is not a memorial. It is a coalition of chapters, campuses, congregations, and neighbors, assembled to carry her truth forward, city by city. Coalitions are how ordinary people out-organize entrenched power. That was true when Ida built them, and it is true now. Her fight is not finished. Neither is ours.
